REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PLANNING
DATE: March 17, 2021 Re: Comm. No. 161
PLACE: Council Chambers
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
TIME: 9:00 a.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 161, reports as
follows:
Communication No. 161, submitted by Mayor Mitchell D. Roth, dated February 24, 2021,
nominates Dana Asis to the Leeward Planning Commission. If confirmed, Ms. Asis will
represent At Large-South K6hala for a term to end December 31, 2025.
Pomaika`i Bartolome was present in the Hilo Chambers to introduce Ms. Asis, who was present
via Zoom. Ms. Asis addressed public concerns of her real estate background by clarifying she
promotes responsible and balanced real estate, and that her family has deep ties to Hawaii Island
that she respects. She is a community-minded individual and has volunteered in the Emergency
Department at North Hawaii Community Hospital since 2014.
Committee Member Tim Richards expressed the need in the County for affordable housing, and
asked Ms. Asis how she sees herself functioning in that role. She responded that she is regularly
in touch with the community as a volunteer and within her professional capacity. She sees this as
an opportunity to expand on her collaboration to work within the larger community to bring
affordable housing opportunities.
Committee Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz noted that, in this capacity, Ms. Asis will be reviewing the
updated County General Plan, which sets long-term development for the island, and said she
appreciates her balanced approach to responsible development.
Pursuant to Hawaii County Charter Chapter 7, Section 6-7.4, there shall be a Leeward Planning
Commission which shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
The vote was then taken on the motion to move this measure to Council with a favorable
recommendation and passed with eight"ayes," and Council Chair Maile David absent and
excused.
PC Report No: 12
