REPORT OF THE <br />COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND MASS TRANSIT <br />DATE: March 16, 2021 <br />PLACE: Council Chambers <br />Hilo, Hawaii <br />TIME: 1:05 p.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawaii County Council <br />Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br />Re: Comm. No. 160 <br />Your Committee on Public Works and Mass Transit, to which was referred Communication No. 160, <br />reports as follows: <br />Communication No. 160, transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitch Roth, dated February 17, 2021, <br />nominates James "Kimo" Lee of Council District 2 to the Transportation Commission. <br />Executive Assistant to the Mayor, P6maika`i Bartolome, introduced the nominee. Mr. Lee is a <br />lifelong Hawaii Island resident, and for the past 15 years, has been responsible for the planning, <br />management, and development of 17,000 acres of kama`aina family-owned lands as Director of <br />Development for W.H. Shipman, Ltd. Mr. Lee holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration <br />from Chaminade University. He is an active member of numerous civic organizations, including the <br />Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hawaii, Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, and <br />the State Historic Preservation — Hawai`i Island Burial Council. If confirmed, he would serve a term to <br />end December 31, 2024. <br />Committee Member Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked why the applicant was interested in this <br />commission. Mr. Lee responded by saying he was interested in the multi -modal transportation plan <br />rather than regulatory compliance and the Mayor convinced him that his skills in planning and <br />development would be a great asset and resource by providing a different perspective. <br />Committee Member Tim Richards thanked Mr. Lee for serving the community and stated he was excited <br />to see a shift in the Commission as he sees many needs to address sustainability. <br />Committee Member Heather Kimball also thanked Mr. Lee and emphasized the importance of mass <br />transit for sustaining the economic viability of our community. <br />Committee Member Holeka Inaba asked Ms. Bartolome why his application was dated January 1, 2019, <br />Ms. Bartolome explained the most current application may have been mistakenly overlooked. <br />PWMTC Report No.: 5 <br />
