5)and 6)Pluchea and lantana will be controlled where necessary manually by hand-pulling or with'o'o
bars;or by clipping and herbicide application to the cut.
Required Personnel and Time Requirement
CCH is planning on organizing ten workdays, and counts on about ten volunteers to come to its
work days. This is the number that commonly comes to CCH work days on its properties. From this
number of people 4 or 5 teams can be assembled that can operate independently in the same overall
area. The source of the volunteers will include CCH,Hawaii Grotto, and local civic association members,
as well as interested people from other non-profit organizations. Contact will be made with other
501(c)3 organizations to determine if additional volunteers can be invited, (The volunteer contribution
below is calculated based on the based on a 6-hr workday and$24.00/hr(based on 2017`s rate for
Hawai'i volunteers from independentsector.org).
A minimum often workdays is planned, and work will be done on Saturdays. How much
acreage can be cleared depends on several factors: a)how rough the land surface is; b)the density of
the invasive plants, and c)the number of teams fielded during the work days. CCH plans to clear at
least the first 100 acre target.
Equipment Required
The PROJECT BUDGET also lists the insurance and equipment,as well as the cost estimates for
these. The list of equipment needed: Vo bars(3); hand clippers(3); loppers(4); hand saws(4);
chains saws,light-weight Stihl(2);Herbicide(8 gal);Flagging(10 rolls);Work gloves(30 pair);Rubber
gloves for herbicide(4 pair).
B) Biological Resource Inventory
CCH proposes to invite the consulting group HICAVE lead by Professor Dr.Megan Porter of the
University of Hawaii at Manoa,to conduct a biological survey of between 20 and 30 lava tubes from the
coast to the mauka limit of the Kahuku Coastal land unit. The consulting group will consist of seven
researchers. The team plans to visit between 20 and 30 lava tubes and conduct a biological inventory.
The cost of the inventory work includes later laboratory work, travel, housing,as well as the final report
to Hawaii County. The seven researchers'time will be contributed by CCH. See PROJECT BUDGET page
for cost estimate.
