II. PROJECT DESCRIPTION <br /> A. Location of Project: Kahua Olohu, Kaunamano, Kau District <br /> B. Number of Persons Who Will Benefit: Thousands <br /> C. Translation:The foundation first,then th e.building. <br /> Our ultimate goal is to prepare the land for traditional cultural uses and practiccs including activities <br /> associated with Makahiki. The land has not been maintained f'Or n an N cars. Our organization was <br /> awarded a grant agreement with a term o f N o r%en cher M, 20 IS o septew i7er 30,2ol8. During this period, <br /> our attention has been directed towards 1-i i ad i,,,,, ;i solutioii it)manage the pasture grass. When the monies <br /> were granted in December 2o18,the gra.,ti G\ai Ito tall to mow-. In addition,obstructions prohibited using a <br /> tractor mower. A landscaping company was himd to provide brush cutting services which allowed us to <br /> remove rocks,barbed wire and t-posts hidden within the tall grass. A budget modification and amendment <br /> to the grant agreement approved in June 2oig has allowed for the purchase of a riding mower. <br /> With the assistance of family and community members,our objectives for the calendar year are to continue <br /> to clear the 13-acre property of tall grass and weeds,maintain a regular mowing schedule,and acquire tools <br /> and equipment for long-term maintenance. Once these priority tasks are completed,we can finalize a site <br /> plan for cultural uses. The Kahua Olohu Committee Members will be working as a team to accomplish the <br /> tasks listed below. <br /> o Prepare property for stewardship activities(January-March 2020) <br /> o Purchase second riding mower,tools and equipment for stewardship and maintenance <br /> o Contract with portable toilet rental service for full year and schedule lua delivery <br /> o Update website to provide community updates and post monthly volunteer workdays <br /> o Mow and maintain pasture grass(January-December 2020) <br /> o Maintain regular mowing schedule throughout calendar year <br /> o Coordinate community stewardship program and grounds maintenance(January-December 2020) <br /> o Continue to clear any loose rocks and remove invasive grass root mats <br /> o Trim grass along fence lines and hand mow proposed community and cultural practice areas <br /> o Prune Christmas Berry along Makahiki viewing area <br /> o Spray invasive weeds and grasses along hillside <br /> o Facilitate opportunities for education and community partnerships(August—December 2o2o) <br /> o Establish partnerships with Ka'u High School and Naalehu Elementary School to allow for <br /> project based learning(PONC funds not required) <br /> o Develop an educational workshop for students to learn how to build a traditional Hawaiian hale <br /> (PONC funds not required) <br /> a Prepare the land for cultural uses and future Makahaki events(January—December 2020) <br /> o Implement landscaping plan using native Hawaiian plants which protide shade,cultural uses <br /> and food sources with a focus on species known to grow in the area according to historical <br /> records <br /> I <br /> I <br />
