i <br /> REPORT THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL OPERATIONS, <br /> CATIONS, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT <br /> DATE: June 1, 2021 Re: Comm.No. 269/Res.No. 135-21 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> i <br /> Hilo, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 1:01 P.M. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Governmental Operations, Relations, and Economic Development, which <br /> was referred Resolution No. 135-21, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 135-21, introduced by Vice Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz, urges the County of <br /> Hawaii to recognize June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual <br /> Pride Month. <br /> Ms. Kierkiewicz introduced the resolution by expressing gratitude to her Legislative Assistant, <br /> Jake Sykes, for taking initiative and writing the resolution. She spoke of the necessity of the <br /> County showing support and embracing inclusivity of all people living on our island. She <br /> highlighted the clause in the resolution urging the Mayor to raise the rainbow flag at the Hawaii <br /> County Building and the West Hawaii Civic Center during the month of June. <br /> Beverly Yates-Tese, President, and Greg Lupton, Treasurer,were present representing Hawaii <br /> Island LGBT Pride. Ms. Yates-Tese expressed her thanks and told the Council how much this <br /> means to the Pride community, especially the young people who may be struggling with their <br /> developing identities. Mr. Lupton also thanked the Council and said the display in the atrium is <br /> meant to highlight the diversity within the Pride community and invited people to enjoy the flag <br /> exhibit and read the history of Hawaii Island LGBT Pride on display during the month of June. <br /> Ms. Pomaika`i Bartolome, Executive Assistant to Mayor Roth, was present to bestow a <br /> proclaimation to Hawaii Island LGBT Pride recognizing that all people deserve respect, dignity <br /> and acceptance, and declaring June as LGBTQIA+Pride Month on behalf of the County of <br /> Hawai`i. <br /> Several Council Members expressed their whole-hearted support for this resolution. They also <br /> expressed their gratitude to Hawaii Island LGBT Pride for being present and to Ms. Kierkiewicz <br /> and Mr. Sykes for crafting the resolution. <br /> GOREDC Report No.: 13 <br />
