STATE OF IIAWAII BILL NO. 60 (DRAFT 2) ORDINANCE NO. 21 6S AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 15, ARTICLE 7, SECTION 15-62, OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2016 EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING TO THE MEMBERSHIP AND TENURE OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: SECTION 1. Purpose. This ordinance reduces the list of veteran organizations in Section 15-62(b)to account for the maturing membership of the various organizations identified by the Veterans Advisory Committee and to expand and allow for new, emerging veteran organizations and veterans who provide valuable assistance on issues that are in alignment with the Veterans Advisory Committee. SECTION 2. Chapter 15, article 7, section 15-62, of the Hawai`i County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), is amended to read as follows: "Section 15-62. Membership and tenure. (a) The members shall serve staggered terms of five years. (b) The membership of the committee shall include one representative each from the American Legion, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, Big Island Retired Military Association, Disabled American Veterans, [Hawai`i Island Veterans Memorial, Inc.,] and Veterans of Foreign Wars[, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Korean War Veterans Organization, Camp Tarawa Detachment #1255 of the Marine Corps League,Navy League of the United States, and the Combat Infantrymen's Association]. The committee shall also include [one] seven at-large [member.] members. Seven or more of the twelve members of the committee shall have served in the United States Uniformed Services; provided that the committee may still meet and conduct business if due to a vacancy or vacancies less than seven members have served in the United States Uniformed Services. (c) Initially, two members shall be appointed for a term of one year, two members shall be appointed for a term of two years, three members shall be appointed for a term of three years, three members shall be appointed for a term of four years, and three members shall be appointed for a term of five years. (d) Any vacancy on the committee shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term, but members whose terms have expired may continue to serve until their successors have been appointed and confirmed.
