O \ y 1 <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAIII STATE OF HAWAIII <br /> OF <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 249 Zi <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO HAWAII WILDFIRE <br /> MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION TO SUPPORT THE COMMENCEMENT OF A <br /> FIREWISE USA°PROGRAM IN THE HAMAKUA COMMUNITY. <br /> WHEREAS, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit <br /> organization, serves as a hub of wildfire prevention, mitigation, and planning activities in the <br /> Hawaii-Pacific region through proactive, collaborative, and forward-thinking projects in order <br /> to be wildfire-safe and wildfire-ready; and <br /> WHEREAS, wildfires affect everything from human safety, infrastructure, drinking <br /> water, agricultural production, cultural resources, native forests, watersheds, and coral reefs; and <br /> WHEREAS, the national Firewise USA°program provides a collaborative framework to <br /> help neighbors in a geographic area get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the <br /> ignition resistance of their homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks at the local level; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, since 2015, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization has assisted 10 <br /> communities on Hawaii Island to achieve Firewise community recognition, but none of them are <br /> located in the Hamdkua district; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization is requesting funds for a <br /> consultant to provide support and guidance on starting a Firewise USA°program in the <br /> Hamdkua community; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawaii Fire Department supports community initiatives to mitigate <br /> fire-related incidents; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 1 will be appropriated to the Hawaii Fire <br /> Department to provide a grant to Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization for the <br /> commencement of a Firewise USA®program in the Hamdkua community. <br />
