REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br /> DATE: April 19, 2022 Re: Comm. No. 717 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 1:44 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 717, reports as <br /> follows: <br /> Communication No. 717, transmitted by Mayor Mitchell D. Roth dated March 28, 2022, <br /> nominates Jason Masters to the Ka`u Community Development Plan Action Committee <br /> (CDPAC). <br /> Ms. Pomaika`i Bartolome, Executive Assistant to Mayor Roth, was present via Zoom to <br /> introduce Mr. Masters. She shared that he was born and raised in Ka`u, and is a graduate of <br /> Ka`u High School where he now serves as a substitute teacher. Besides having an extensive <br /> background in Environmental Studies, Planning, and Public Administration, Mr. Masters is a <br /> farmer and commercial fisherman. He returned home to fulfill his lifelong passion of giving <br /> back and working to support his community and Hawaii Island. <br /> Mr. Masters was present before Your Committee in the Kona Chambers and spoke of his <br /> educational experience in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, and Planning. He voiced his <br /> appreciation for the opportunity to be involved, and noted the importance of being able to <br /> communicate government processes to spur community involvement. <br /> Committee Member Maile David praised Mr. Master's for his resume and work in protecting the <br /> natural environment and appreciates his willingness to step up and serve his community. <br /> Committee Chair Ashley Kierkiewicz praised Mr. Masters for his work with the Na`alehu <br /> Resilience Hub, where he helped deliver design thinking classes and 3D-printing workshops to <br /> the community. He explained that exposing youth to new technology like 3D-printing proved to <br /> them that there are no limits to what they can do as they grow older. Chair Kierkiewicz thanked <br /> him for bringing his knowledge and experience back home and praised his willingness to get <br /> more residents involved in governmental processes. <br /> The vote was then taken on the motion to move this measure to Council with a favorable <br /> recommendation and passed with nine "ayes." <br /> PC Report No.: 61 <br />
