WHEREAS, Kakala O Kamoa Cultural Center is included on the prioritized list of lands <br /> to be considered for acquisition as priority number 16, as submitted by the Commission in its <br /> 2021 Annual Report to the Mayor dated December 10, 2021 (see "Exhibit A", attached hereto); <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Kakala O Kamoa Cultural Center, located in the district of North Kona, is <br /> approximately .78 acre and is significant to the County of Hawaii for the following reasons: <br /> (1) Acquisition would preserve historic and culturally important lands and sites that <br /> promote preservation and perpetuation of native Hawaiian culture,tradition, and <br /> customary practices; and <br /> (2) Acquisition would fulfill the purpose of protecting one of the few remaining open <br /> space properties in this area along Alii Drive; and <br /> (3) Acquisition would provide access for cultural practices, shoreline gathering, fishing, <br /> surfing, and recreational use to residents and visitors to connect with the `aina; and <br /> WHEREAS, the property is currrently listed for sale and the owner is willing to <br /> participate in the PONC process for a preservation sale to the County of Hawaii; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> pursuant to Chapter 2, Article 42 of the Code, the Director of Finance is hereby authorized to <br /> enter into negotiations for the acquisition of tax map key (3) 7-7-004:025, also known as Kakalo <br /> O Kamoa Cultural Center, an oceanfront parcel located on the north side of Holualoa Bay along <br /> Alii Drive, adjacent to "L,ymans" a popular surfing spot in the district of North Kona, utilizing <br /> the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Fund. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Director of Finance is hereby authorized to <br /> initiate any funding mechanisms required for the acquisition of tax map key (3) 7-7-004:025 <br /> situated in the district of North Kona, also known as Kakala O Kamoa Cultural Center, in <br /> accordance with the terms of this resolution. <br /> 2 <br />
