The Project Description expands on each of the areas listed above, describing in
detail the plans and costs.
The Mapping and Inventory of existing plant records is a long-over due task
that will take the thirty years of data records and integrate these old records with new
ones into an ArcGIS platform. Once this major undertaking is accomplished, these
invaluable records can be analyzed spatially and mapped so that landscape planning,
scientific research and historical trends can be detected. A contract for a part-time
horticulturist who can assist with maintenance and help begin the arduous task of
computerizing the thirty years of records and integrating these with the old
computerized records is part of this request.
Equipment and Supplies: After four long years of barely making ends meet,
the basic gardening supplies and equipment are in serious disrepair. Irrigations
systems no longer work; the mower and weed eaters are so old that parts are no longer
made; basic yard chemicals and nutrients need to be purchased. With the heavy
rainfall we have received this year, the need for a working mower is urgent, but the cost
of purchasing a new 48-inch zero turn mower is cost prohibitive. We have researched
leasing a mower in Kailua-Kona and found that the cost is moderate and repairs would
be the responsibility of the company owning the mower.
Restoration of Educational, Caretaker and Maintenance Buildings: Once
Amy's home has been restored and re-purposed, the Friends will have a residence for
an on-site caretaker who is tasked with providing security to the Garden as well as
assisting with the landscape activities. A portion of this home will be renovated for use
for public presentations, classes in ethnobotany, children's education, plant
identification, history of the Garden, etc. The home can also be used as housing for
student interns and visiting scientists. Tenting of all three building complexes is in the
budget, but costs are not being requested from PONC, but from other resources.
Promoting Public Safety: Although we all dream of the time when our world
will be back to "normal", it appears that the Covid-19 Virus will be with us for the
foreseeable future. In order to make our Garden as safe for visitors, volunteers and
others as possible, we would like to PPE and cleaning supplies. Appropriate signs for
visitors regarding social distancing, mask wearing, etc. should be placed in several
areas around the Garden. The Garden personnel will strictly follow State and National
Guidelines on appropriate response to the Covid-19 virus.
Fencing: Pigs are a constant problem not only in the Garden, but in surrounding
areas and without proper fencing, the Friends have no way to deal with the pig problem.
There are several areas in the Garden proper that need pig fencing, including around
Amy Greenwell's residence; along one boundary of the Visitor Center; and the entire
9
