Contract Horticulturist: In supporting the need for a sophisticated mapping
system like GIS, the Friends propose to contract with a part-time horticulturist (two
days/wk) who would assist with Garden maintenance as well as plant mapping, and with
integrating the old data records with the new ones; with compiling the thirty plus years of
information that has not been computerized; with monitoring of out-plantings; tracking
endangered/threatened species; finding what plants have gone missing after four years
of closure; and working to replace missing plants while conserving the collection and
assisting with Nursery support.
Amount Requested for Contract Horticulturist: $22,464
Equipment and Supplies:
Even before the Garden closed in 2016, the equipment required to maintain the
plants, the nursery, the sprinkler systems, the greenhouses, and the landscaping was in
poor repair. Since the Museum had the Garden listed for sale, it was struggling
financially and the equipment was not in good repair. Thus, there is now an urgent
need for supplies, such as fuel, fertilizer, irrigation parts, landscape equipment including
weed eaters, tractors, and mowing equipment. Supplies that are needed include fuel,
fertilizer, irrigation parts, office supplies, weed eater (the one they use now is over ten
years old and doesn't work well), insecticide, potting soil, and small garden tools.
The used tractor and mower were purchased new in 2002 and are still in use.
The tractor still works but needs constant repair. The rear-mounted mower is long past
its useful life. The manufacturer no longer makes parts for it so when it breaks down
(frequently!), it requires loading the mower and taking it to a welder— a time frame of a
week or more lost when the grass needed mowing. The longer the wait, the higher the
grass grows, so mowing is that much more difficult. A new mower is over $13,000, so
leasing a mower when needed would be an appropriate expenditure and save money
and time.
Small equipment and Supplies: $ 4.573
Annual amount needed to repair tractor: $ 1,920
Annual lease of zero turn 48" mower: $ 6,292
Applicant Share and Other Resources: Section IV.A.1 details the Friends' Volunteers, a
tropical agricultural professor (University of Hawai'i) volunteer and Garden Manager
(Bishop Museum) value of match for work in this section.
TOTAL AMOUNT REQUESTED: $35,249
16
