County of Hawai'i _y -�r <br /> Office of the County Auditor <br /> County Auditor <br /> County of Hawaii 120 Pauahi St., 309 .. <br /> Office of the County Auditor Hilo, HI 96720 - <br /> Ph 808.961.8386 F 808.961.8905 v • — -- <br /> www.hawaiicounty.gov <br /> August 09, 2022 <br /> Honorable Maile Mederios David, Council Chair <br /> and Members of the Hawaii County Council <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> 25 Aupuni Street <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Dear Chair David and Council Members, <br /> In accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards and the Hawaii County <br /> Charter Section 3-18(d)(2), the Office of the County Auditor conducts or causes to be conducted: <br /> Performance and/or financial audits of the funds, programs, services, and operations of any <br /> county agency, executive agency, or program, as set forth by the county auditor in an annual <br /> audit plan that shall be transmitted to the county council and the mayor and filed with the county <br /> clerk as a public record. <br /> We have completed our follow-up engagement of the Cash Handling at the County of Hawai`i's <br /> Mass Transit Agency Report No. 2018-01, dated April 30, 2018. The objective was to determine <br /> if the Mass Transit Agency implemented the 2018 cash handling audit recommendations. <br /> In January 2022, the Hawaii County Council voted on Bill 105 to temporarily suspend fares for all <br /> mass transit fixed routes and paratransit services until December 31, 2025. Grant funds will cover <br /> operational costs during the temporary suspension period. The intent of the amendment is to <br /> remove barriers to riding public transit, boost and rebuild ridership, and keep frontline employees <br /> and riders safe and socially distanced from each other by eliminating the exchange of fares. <br /> As a result of the change in operations, we determined eight of our original recommendations are <br /> not applicable (N/A). To improve government accountability and ensure audit recommendations <br /> are implemented or resolved, we will be continuously monitoring the status of pending <br /> recommendations using our remediation tracker. <br /> Hawai`i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Emloyer <br />
