Form #: B-52 <br /> 7/18/91 <br /> DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE <br /> REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br /> DEPARMENT: Research and Development DATE: December 13, 2022 <br /> 850.E <br /> STAFF CONTACT: Frecia Cevallos PHONE: 961-80885 <br /> A REQUEST: <br /> A Resolution is requested authorizing the County (via the Research and Development) to <br /> enter into a contract with the Edith Kanakaole Foundation in the amount of$90,525.00 to <br /> support the KIPA Business Cultural Training. The purpose of this program is to train tour <br /> operators and businesses to provide accurate and authentic visitor products and <br /> experiences. <br /> B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br /> Background: <br /> The Edith Kanakaole Foundation has been conducting indigenous data science research and <br /> cultural education/training workshops for over 20 years. It developed the KIPA program to <br /> provide a space for community and county collaboration, and training to businesses and tour <br /> operators to provide accurate and authentic visitor experiences. <br /> Justification: <br /> The KIPA program advances the department's Tourism Program goal of Responsible <br /> Tourism, Pono-Based Communication, and Place Based Education. The program also meets <br /> the department objectives of engaging residents and existing Hawaii island businesses <br /> through direct cohort instruction.
