After-School All-Stars Hawaii(ASAS Hawaii)provides after-school and summer programs that keep children safe and help them reach their potential in school and in life.Formed in 2009,ASAS Hawaii works with eleven middle and intermediate schools,serving 2,624 students last year.We work in Title I schools with high numbers of families qualifying for free and reduced lunch.The Hawaii Island schools for this project are Keaau Middle,Pahoa High and Intermediate and Waiakea Intermediate. 2.In 1,000 characters,briefly describe the program you are seeking grant funds for.* Funding will support Sports as a Hook,a unique program that engages at-risk youth in a variety of beneficial academic and social activities, using athletics to grab their attention.This project will increase access to athletics for children who might not otherwise engage in sports due to time and money constraints.Through team sports,students are exposed to lessons in leadership,teamwork,resilience,discipline,nutrition, and gender equality. Prior to the pandemic,ASAS Hawaii developed an island-wide Athletics League,which was put on hold due to school restrictions.The League offers volleyball,basketball,pylon football,and softball.Each sport is played over one school quarter,with school sites coming together for championship tournaments in the final week.Students can also join other sports classes,such as archery,track and field,and soccer.
