<br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
<br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
<br /> ESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO KkMAKUA
<br /> HARVEST, INC., FOR ITS STH ANNUAL FARM FEST.
<br /> WHEREAS, Hamakua Harvest, Inc., is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization whose vision
<br /> is to promote and advance Hamakua agriculture by supporting local farmers, enriching the
<br /> region's social fabric, and promoting healthy, rural lifestyles for the benefit of Hamakua's
<br /> communities, economy, and environment; and
<br /> WHEREAS, to kick off Honoka`a's Western Week, Hamakua Harvest, Inc.,provides its
<br /> annual Farm Fest on Sunday, May 21, 2023, which celebrates and promotes Hamakua farm
<br /> products; and
<br /> WHEREAS,the annual Farm Fest includes a large farmer's market, local food, activities
<br /> for children, entertainment, and local experts providing free agricultural-based educational
<br /> sessions on this year's theme of"Canoe Crops", centered around `ulu(breadfruit), kalo (taro),
<br /> niu (coconut), `uala (purple sweet potato), and mai`a(banana); and
<br /> WHEREAS, the annual Farm Fest brings the community and visitors together to
<br /> celebrate Hamakua's agricultural past, present, and future to bolster and help sustain local
<br /> producers' direct marketing opportunities; and
<br /> WHEREAS, Hamakua Harvest, Inc., is requesting funds to help defray the costs of this
<br /> event, including, but not limited to, honorary fees for educators, entertainment expenses, and
<br /> event supplies; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports sustainable
<br /> agricultural practices by promoting educational opportunities designed to build skills and
<br /> community capacity in agricultural activities; and
<br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code,
<br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
<br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event,
<br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now,
<br /> therefore,
<br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
<br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 1 will be appropriated to the Department of
<br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Hamakua Harvest, Inc., for its 8th annual Farm
<br /> Fest.
