REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON FINANCE <br /> DATE: July 25, 2023 Re: Comm. No. 358/Res. No. 201-23 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 9:01 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 201-23, reports as follows: <br /> Resolution No. 201-23, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication No. 358 <br /> dated June 29, 2023, authorizes the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the United States Department <br /> of Housing and Urban Development. <br /> This resolution allows for the receipt of$10 million which would be used to support the planning, <br /> design, and construction cost of the Kukuiola Assessment Center and Emergency Shelter in <br /> North Kona. <br /> Committee Member Ashley L. Kierkiewicz expressed her gratitude towards Senator Brian Schatz for his <br /> assistance in acquiring these funds for the County. <br /> Committee Chair Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked Housing and Community Development Specialist <br /> Sharon Hirota, who appeared via videoconference, for comment, to which she expressed her <br /> appreciation to the Council and asked for their support with this measure. <br /> Committee Member Rebecca Villegas asked Ms. Hirota to provide details on how they plan to use these <br /> funds. Ms. Hirota replied that these funds would go directly to the vertical building and the completion <br /> of its construction. Ms. Villegas then asked Ms. Hirota if these were the same funds they previously <br /> discussed, to which Ms. Hirota confirmed that they were and explained in more detail how these funds <br /> would help this project. <br /> Committee Member Michelle Galimba requested a brief overview of the Kukuiola Center and its <br /> location. Ms. Hirota provided a detailed description of its location and what the center would look like <br /> once completed. <br /> Pursuant to Section 46-7, Hawaii Revised Statues, the Mayor of the County of Hawaii is authorized to <br /> execute, on behalf of the County, this and all future agreements and related documents with the United <br /> States Department of Housing and Urban Development to receive funds as indicated above. <br /> FC Report No. 56 <br />
