above Waipi`o Valley to allow families, schools, organizations, and individuals to still be
able to learn about Waipi`o Valley, hear mo`olelo, hike with us, and help malama `aina.
2. Ka`elehua: Funded by OHA in which we offered a series of free workshops. Workshops
included mele/oli focusing on Hi`iakaikapoliopele`s travels to Hamakua — Mahiki —
Waipi`o Valley area. We offered opportunities to learn how to make rock walls in which
participants also learned the different names used for the different rocks and how to
position them. Participants learned protocol utilized throughout the building of the rock
wall. We also offered workshops on traditional farming and how to farm utilizing the
moon phases. Participants were able to take home native and endemic plants/trees to add
to their home gardens.
3. Full Calabash Fund: Funded by The Kohala Center. Through this project we assisted
families with providing prepared meals, food boxes (produce, fish, beef, smoked meat
and smoked sausages). We were able to support restaurants, locally owned businesses,
farmers, fishermen, ranchers and hunters. To allow donations to families be larger, we
also harvested produce from our farm sites to be added to boxes being donated to
families. We donated a wide range of plants, trees, seeds, and cuttings to help other
farmers and families with their home gardens.
