Note:organizations are required to
have at least one year of experience with the proposed service/activity OR can demonstrate sufficient expertise.
1.Provide your organization's mission statement.*
Action 4 Animals Hawai'i(A4A)is a 501(c)(3)foster-based,all-volunteer animal rescue organization specializing
in the adoption of unwanted, neglected, and abused cats and dogs in our community. Our mission is to promote
animal welfare through fostering, adopting, and providing community resources and education for the spaying
and neutering of companion and community cats and dogs to reduce their overpopulation on Hawai'i Island.
2.In 500 characters,provide a brief narrative about your organization's experience,knowledge,and capacity to
carry out the proposed program/service.*
Through the end of 2023(2 V2 years since founding),A4A has found forever homes for 843 cats and 35 dogs on-
island, and 20 dogs and 14 cats on the mainland U.S.and Canada. For the Iris Project,A4A will draw on our
very successful cat fostering experience(i.e.,all 843 adopted cats came through our cat fostering program)to
expand our dog fostering program to support the adoption of 30 dogs selected from County of Hawaii Animal
Control and Protection(AC).A4A volunteers have long-standing significant experience assisting Hawaii island
rescues with socialization programs and adoptions of their rescue dogs.Information on animals that we select
from AC is transferred directly into our ShelterLuv database of foster animals, and we will track their health and
socialization progress until they reach their forever homes!
3.In 1,000 characters, briefly describe the program/service you are seeking grant funds for.*
The goal of the Iris Project is to find forever homes for 30 dogs selected from County of Hawaii Animal Control
and Protection(AC)which has a 35%euthanasia rate for dogs. Our focus is on those dogs who are assessed as
non-aggressive and highly adoptable but not taken by the bigger animal rescues like Hawaii Island Humane
Society or Aloha Ilk)often due to their overcapacity limitations. We will accomplish this goal in 3 ways: 1)
fostering 2)boarding,and 3)fly outs to mainland rescues.
•
Our plan is to consistently have 5 dogs in foster care and an additional 5 dogs boarded at Pampered Pooch,a
local kennel(Volcano,HI).The foster dog training will include potty training, leash walking, and learning basic
commands.Trained A4A volunteers will also walk, train and socialize the boarded dogs. The dogs will be
showcased at our adoption events,on our website and social media.
We estimate adopting 2-3 dogs per month from our total of 10 dogs in foster or boarding.A4A will always have a
list of 10-12 adoptable dogs at AC that we visit weekly, walk and take to play groups. As soon as a dog is
adopted,we fill that spot, whether it is with a foster or in boarding, with an already identified dog from AC.Finally,
our plan is to fly out 8 dogs per year,4 in the fall 2024 and 4 in the spring of 2025 to mainland partner rescues:
Action 4 Animals Hawaii-The Iris Project
