Attachment B for the 2023 PONC Suggestion Form
environment —many of whom might not have the chance to meet or connect
otherwise. Many friendships have started or been strengthened by workdays on the
Trail.
• The Trail contributes to community equity and resilience, getting people out of their cars
and walking or biking together outdoors.
• The proposed trail expansion protects and preserves the natural beauty of South
Kohala's pu'u, plains, and waterways by reducing traffic congestion and creating and
promoting accessible open space, outdoor activity, renewed native plant and riparian
habitats and reforestation efforts, stream restoration, and common sense flood
abatement.
• It also protects an essential community corridor from over-development, obstruction of
view planes, urban sprawl and development infill.
• The proposed trail expansion provides an opportunity to educate•and highlight rich
areas of historic and cultural significance within the district, such as Parker Ranch and
the history of the Paniolo, the native Hawaiian Kohala field system, and the Waimea to
Puako portion of the King's Trail.
• The Trail creates opportunities for educational school field trips and community
workshops on topics like stream restoration, ecosystems, native plants, birding, and
more.
Thank you for your consideration of this application and supporting documents.
With Warm Aloha,
Ke Ala Kahawai 'a Waimea PONC Committee on Behalf of the People of the District of South
Kohala, Hawaii (Clemson Lam, Zaheva Knowles,James Hustace,Amanda Rieux and Mimi Kerley)
•
