Representative David Tarnas PK °r Phone No.: (808)586-8510
House District 8 xa p Qss
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
STATE OF HAWAII
STATE CAPITOL,ROOM 442
415 SOUTH BERETANIA STREET
HONOLULU,HAWAII 96813
January 27, 2023
County of Hawaii PONC
25 Aupuni Street, Suite 2603
Hilo,Hawai`i 96720
To Whom It May Concern,
I would like to express my support for the Waimea Trails and Greenways project: Ke Ala
Kahawai 0 Waimea—The Streamside Trail of Waimea. This trail is a great benefit to the
community as demonstrated by its use in the past seven years by commuters, dog walkers, school
children and people getting exercise or simply enjoying a nature walk.
The trail links community hubs in Waimea and brings people together in a healthy
environment. The adjacent Waikoloa Stream has benefited greatly from trail improvements as
volunteers have worked to clear the stream bed of debris that cause flooding. Our volunteers
have also replaced many invasive plants with native species such as `iliahi (sandalwood), `ohi`a,
wiliwili,koai`a and a`ali`i.
Built and maintained entirely by volunteer efforts, its use will greatly expand when it is
built as outlined in the design.
We hope you will consider the many benefits the Ke Ala Kahawai 0 Waimea provides to
the community as we seek funding to start construction.
Mahalo,
Representative David. A. Tarnas
Hawaii State House of Representatives
