REQUEST: <br />Pursuant to the Hawaii County Code Section 2-139(a)(3)(A), Council approval is requested for a <br />grant award of $33,200 to Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO), a 501(c)(3) <br />organization. <br />B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br />The Hawai'i Fire Department (Hl"D) recognizes the importance of reducing wildfire risk,and <br />enhancing community safety through proactive hazard mitigation measures; and the Community <br />Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space project is designed to mitigate fire hazards by facilitating <br />voluntary compliance from property owners, ensuring environmentally sound vegetation removal, <br />and coordinating necessary permits and compliance with local and federal regulations; and the <br />total cost for Phase 1 of the Community Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space project is estimated <br />at $43,575, with $33,200 in federal funds provided through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program <br />(HMGP) and $10,375 in matching funds contributed as in -kind donations; and HWMO has <br />demonstrated expertise and commitment to wildfire mitigation and community safety, making it a <br />suitable recipient for this subgrant to implement Phase 1 of the project. <br />SIGNED: 9-DATE: <br />Department.
