40JMVY OF M�L <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII K' STATE OF HAWAII <br />T <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3 2 <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO BIG ISLAND <br />RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL FOR THE 2024 <br />HAWAI`I ISLAND SAKADA DAY CELEBRATION. <br />WHEREAS, on April 9, 2015, the Honorable Governor David Ige signed into law <br />HB604, designating December 20th as Sakada Day, marking a long-awaited formal recognition <br />of the invaluable contributions of the Filipino community across the State of Hawaii; and <br />WHEREAS, the Big Island Resource Conservation and Development Council <br />(BIRCDC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, supports the economic, cultural, and natural <br />environment of Hawaii Island through its sponsorship of festivals, programs, and special events <br />unique to this island; and <br />WHEREAS, BIRCDC is collaborating with the Big Island Filipino Community Council <br />and the Hawaii Association of Filipino Educators to coordinate and host the Hawaii Island <br />Sakada Day Celebration on Saturday, December 15, 2024 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, <br />an event that is free and open to the public; and <br />WHEREAS, the Hawaii Island Sakada Day Celebration will honor, showcase, and <br />commemorate the legacy and contribution of 125,000 sakadas — plantation workers of Filipino <br />ancestry — who arrived in Hawaii between 1906-1946 to work on sugar and pineapple <br />plantations, profoundly shaping the local economy, society, and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, the celebration will pay special tribute to Mr. Rafael Taroma, the last <br />remaining sakada1 and honor the enduring legacy of all sakadas through exhibits of Filipino <br />artifacts, traditional attire, arts and crafts, food booths, and cultural entertainment; and <br />WHEREAS, BIRCDC is requesting funds for a reimbursement of expenses for food and <br />beverages for the 2024 Hawaii Island Sakada Day Celebration; and <br />
