Project Information
*41. Project Title
Makahanaloa Aloha `Aina
42. Project Start Date
03/10/2025
43. Project End Date
06/30/2025
*44. Please select all areas of Hawaii Island where the project will be administered, delivered, and implemented.
North Hilo
*45. Please select the district of the Council Member from which you would like to apply for Contingency Relief Funds.
Council District 1
*46. In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
This project is aimed at supporting 2 Aloha `Aina events, which are co -hosted by Pepe'ekeo Community Development Corporation Fishing access Committee and
Makahanaloa Fishing Association. On April 6th and June 8th we will be taking care of the shoreline of Hilo Palikii from Waima`au` au stream in the south to Kapehu
stream in the north. These regular events are necessary to keep our shoreline accesses open for all. Aloha `aina day activities include trail maintenance through weed
whacking, mowing and pulling weeds. We also will be outplanting native species which help stabilize the shoreline and restore the natural ecosystem. These events are
also important for building pilina between kanaka and `aina. Spending time on `aina together enriches our community. Telling stories, sharing work, and eating together
will help to build bridges in a kaiaulu that is quickly changing. Only through this work can we hope to build resilience.
*47.501(c)(3) Mission Statement
Our mission is to grow and protect fishing community rights to provide food for families and maintain the generational bond with our treasured shoreline areas.
*48. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project.
Makahanaloa Fishing Association serves the community of Pepeekeo. As previously stated, MFA's mission is to grow and protect the rights of our fishing community to
provide food for their families and maintain generational ties to the treasured shorelines of Hilo Palikfi. The greatest threat to our mission is dwindling accessibility to our
shorelines due to the overgrowth of invasive species and the privatization of coastal lands. These access ways are essential for ensuring the nourishment and well-being
of Pepeekeo's community. While social challenges posed by private landowners may continue to inhibit our ability to access our shorelines, environmental barriers and
threats are ones we can actively address. That is why these Aloha `Aina days are important to us and for our community.
*49. Please upload a completed CRF Grant Budget Form,
Signed DISTRICT I CRF REQUEST Budget Page.pdf
Public Purpose of Requested Funds
Per §2-138 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), the County may grant an award only if the proposed program or service provides direct
public benefits and fulfills a public purpose within the County.
50. In 2,000 characters or less, describe the measurable outcomes you aim to achieve with these funds.
With these funds, we aim to achieve the following outcomes: - Restoration & Conservation: Successfully outplant 250 native plants to enhance local biodiversity and
stabilize the shoreline. - Community Engagement: Engage 25 families in our Aloha `Ama days, increase awareness of environmental stewardship and building pilina
(deeper connections) with our wahi - Safe Access & Stewardship: Maintain and improve two safe trails and access points for local fishermen to utilize. - Education:
Collect recordings showcasing the ike of our places and practices as shared by three kupuna from our community.
*52.
