Project Information <br />EXIIIBIT A <br />* 38. Project Title <br />From Humble Hives to Global Impact: The Story of Kona's Beekeeping <br />39. Project Start Date <br />04/04/2025 <br />40. Please select the district of the Council Member from which you would like to apply for Contingency Relief Funds. <br />Council District 8 <br />*43, In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project. <br />In partnership with the Kona Historical Society, I will create an exhibit for their museum that captures the history of beekeeping in Kona. The exhibit will include a <br />timeline of the early challenges and triumphs of bringing bees to Hawaii. Including how their introduction impacted native pollinators and the ecosystem. It will include a <br />look into commercial beekeeping as an industry in Kona from the 1950's on. We will gather and share artifacts of Kona beekeepers for display. As we tell the story of <br />how these industrious insects supported our Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, fruit exports as essential pollinators. Using images and video the exhibit will paint a picture of <br />the unique factors that make Kona an ideal environment for bees, from its diverse flora to its favorable climate. And discuss the significant economic impact of <br />beekeeping on Kona's agriculture. Their Industrious work has helped to sustain our local economy for generations. This project will include a museum exhibit which will <br />be open for up to four months, five oral histories of Kona residents who are involved in the beekeeping business and a related video, hosting a free community lecture <br />on the history of beekeeping in Kona, and a Kona Historical Society Huaka i to tour a bee field. We will be opening the exhibit to local schools for field trips for the <br />duration of the exhibit, and the exhibit and related events will be open to Kama'aina and visitors alike. <br />*44. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement <br />The Kona Historical Society will preserve the history of Kona to enrich, inspire, and inform our community and visitors. We will do this through collecting, preserving, <br />researching, interpreting, and disseminating the history of Kona. <br />*45. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project. <br />Kona Historical Society is hosting the exhibit in our museum. KHS is also facilitating the field trip and community event components of the project. At the conclusion of <br />the public display of the exhibit, KHS will incorporate the exhibit and oral histories into our archive. <br />*46. In 2,000 characters or less, describe the measurable outcomes you aim to achieve with these funds. <br />Research and Oral History Collection Description: Conduct comprehensive research on the history and development of beekeeping in Hawaii. Identify and reach out to <br />key figures within the beekeeping industry to gather their stories and insights. Collect oral histories to be digitized and stored in the KHS archive for community access <br />and preservation. Proposed Output Target: Collect and archive 6 oral histories of influential figures in Hawaii's beekeeping industry, with all materials made available to <br />the community and researchers through the KHS's digital archive. Film Production of the Beekeeping Story Description: Create a 10-minute piece capturing the unique <br />history of beekeeping in Kona, highlighting the diverse people involved, the beauty of Kona's bee yards and ranches, and the environmental and economic significance of <br />the industry. Measure: Completion and release of the film. Proposed Output Target: Complete the film with contributions from at least 20 individuals involved in the <br />beekeeping community and local experts. Ensure the film showcases visually engaging shots of Kona landscapes and apiaries, with the final version presented as part of <br />the museum exhibit. Museum Exhibit Development Description: Develop a museum exhibit that showcases the film alongside historical artifacts, photographs, and <br />educational materials that tell the story of Kona's beekeeping heritage. Measure: The number of visitors and school groups attending the exhibit Proposed Output <br />Target: Launch the exhibit for a 4-month duration at the Kona Historical society, with a goal of reaching at least 500 visitors. Community Lectures and Events <br />Description: Host a series of community lectures and events that feature the film, discussion panels, and presentations by beekeeping experts. Measure: The number of <br />events held, the number of attendees per event, and participant feedback. Proposed Output Target: Host 5 community events with a total of 300 attendees. <br />*49.
