SIGNIFICANCE AND MANAGEMENT, <br />• A diverse range of native plant <br />species associated with tropical dry <br />forest coastal habitat are present <br />within this property, many of which are <br />extremely rare. <br />• An abundant and diverse <br />representation of aquatic resources <br />exists along and within the coastline <br />and expands into the ocean. <br />• The historic Ala Nui Aupuni can be <br />located just inland of the property and <br />the ancient Ala Loa can be identified <br />throughout portions of the property, <br />providing an intact representation of a <br />complex network of trails that extend <br />into an island -wide ancient and <br />historic trails network, <br />• Special examples of the unique <br />hydrology of the North Kona lands are <br />present on the property, serving as a <br />significant representation of the <br />Kekahawai'ole watershed(s). <br />• Descendants of Kapalaoa are <br />invested in developing an appropriate <br />plan for the stewardship of this place, <br />Descendants Kapena and Alika (above) and other <br />members of the Alapai 'ohana worked together during the <br />site visit to remove significant amounts of fishing net and <br />other marine debris from the tidal areas of the property. <br />SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACQUISITION AND/OR MANAGEMENT <br />• Partnerships are established and the community is in full -support of the properties protection and <br />appropriate stewardship. <br />• Identified partnerships include the descendant -led group Na 'Oiwi o Pu'uanahulu, along with Hui <br />Aloha Klholo, The Nature Conservancy, Na Ala Hele State Trails Program, the Hawai'l State Parks <br />Program, and the National Park Service Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. <br />• The seller is willing to sell for preservation, <br />STRENGTHS <br />• Acquisition of this property will support and strengthen the connection of Native Hawaiian Lineal <br />descendents to the lands which they once lived on for generations and will reconnect their families' <br />to a cultural landscape which they are responsible for having created, maintained, and brought to <br />life for hundreds of years. <br />• The ancient and historic trail system traverses through the property. These trails, along with coastal <br />to upland trails which transect and connect them, are a part of the Federally designated Ala <br />
