a. One or more strategies to be implemented:.&
Plan to continue offering the festival either annually or biennially, thereby reaching new audiences and
exploring new sub -themes
Continue incorporating prod ucts/activities/learnings from the festival into our thematic curriculum being shared
with K-12 schools on Hawai'I Island through field trips to Heritage Center and/or on -site programming delivered
to schools
b. If any, who the sustainability partner(s) is/are (and their roles/responsibilities): *
We hope to look to the same community stakeholders that generously provided in -kind support, as well as
financial investment for our inaugural 2024 festival (e.g., Hamakua-Kohala Health, the People's Theatre, the
Honoka'a Business Association, plus the many generous businesses who stepped up as festival sponsors). We
also hope to continue the close working relationship we developed with the various departments of Hawai'i
County government, which provided invaluable introductions and advice, in addition to grant support.
c. Any other business planning efforts to be undertaken: *
Revenue Diversification: Beyond grant and sponsorship funding, we are actively exploring other revenue
streams to ensure the festival's financial sustainability. This includes merchandising opportunities such as the
production and sale of our second annual Heritage Cookbook and a commemorative Festival t-shirt and other
gear.
Green Initiatives and Energy Efficiency: We aim to promote awareness of environmental sustainability among
Festival attendees and vendors and will encourage the implementation of green initiatives such as waste
reduction, recycling programs, and use of eco-friendly materials.
Cultural Preservation: Our Festival is designed to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the
Hamakua region. By incorporating traditional performances, cultural exhibits, and educational programs, we will
actively contribute to the long-term preservation of local traditions and a "sense of place" in Honoka'a.
d. Significant challenges and/or barriers you anticipate encountering (or are encountering) and how the
program/service will address those challenges/barriers. *
As a small not -for -profit museum with a commitment to free admission, we continually face the challenge of how
to ensure adequate resources to fund our ambitious long-term objectives. The NHHF board is working on a long-
term strategic plan for the Heritage Center, with one of our goals being to launch a capital campaign to build our
capacity to grow and sustain ourselves. By promoting the name, mission and achievements of the Honoka'a
Heritage Center, we are confident that the Festival will effectively introduce us to new audiences and continue to
aid us in moving toward this goal.
North Hawaii Heritage Foundation - 2025 HAMAKUA SUGAR DAYS FESTIVAL
