REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL OPERATIONS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS DATE: April 1, 2025 PLACE: Council Chambers Hilo, Hawaii TIME: 9:01 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Re: Comm. No. 201 Your Committee on Governmental Operations and External Affairs, to which was referred Communication No. 201, reports as follows: Communication No. 201, transmitted by Mayor C. Kimo Alameda, dated March 13, 2025, requests the Council's review and confirmation of the nomination of Josephine "Dojo" Tanimoto to the South Kohala Community Development Plan Action Committee. Executive Assistant to the Mayor Micah Alameda was present in the Hilo Chambers to introduce Ms. Tanimoto, who was also present via remote technology in Waimea, to the Committee. Committee Member Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder asked Corporation Counsel Renee Schoen if it was necessary for him to recuse himself from voting as his Aunt is listed as one of the references for the nominee. Ms. Schoen stated that his disclosure of the relationship would probably suffice, but in an abundance of caution he could recuse himself if he desired to do so. Committee Member James Hustace spoke in favor of the appointment. Pursuant to Chapter 16, Article 3, Section 16-5(a) of the Hawaii County Code, members of the South Kohala Community Development Plan Action Committee shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
