COUNTY OF HAWAI`I <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. 235 25 <br />(DRAFT 2) <br />A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARIES OF THE <br />BOMBINGS OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI AND REAFFIRMING A COMMITMENT <br />TO PEACE. <br />WHEREAS, on August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan <br />were devastated by the first —and only —use of atomic bombs during war —events whose <br />destruction and human suffering resonate as an enduring warning about the catastrophic impact <br />of nuclear warfare; and <br />WHEREAS, the eightieth anniversaries of these bombings mark a solemn milestone and <br />a moment for collective remembrance of the lives lost, wounded, and forever altered; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council honors the memory of all victims and acknowledges the <br />intergenerational trauma endured by survivors and their families; and <br />WHEREAS, Resolution No. 449-24, Draft 3, adopted by this body on March 20, 2024, <br />recognized the importance of peace, diplomacy, disarmament, and the importance of resolving <br />conflicts and disputes with Aloha; and <br />WHEREAS, Resolution No. 317-23, adopted by this body on November 15, 2023, <br />authorized the Mayor to establish a Sister City relationship between the County of Hawaii and <br />Hatsukaichi, a city in Hiroshima Prefecture; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that the <br />County hereby solemnly acknowledges and commemorates the eightieth anniversaries of the <br />atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by reaffirming its commitment to championing <br />peace, nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the resolution of conflict through diplomacy <br />and mutual respect. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County pledges to continue to support public <br />education, cultural exchange, and community remembrance events in peacebuilding initiatives. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County urges citizens and institutions to reflect <br />on the lessons of 1945, recommit to tolerance, justice, and reconciliation, and reject the use and <br />proliferation of nuclear weapons. <br />
