In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Big Island Dance Council (BIDC) will present Rock the Hafla, a dance performance and
event on September 13, 2025, at the Hilo Town Market Building. The event will spotlight belly dance Fusion, a Middle Eastern
dance form that has been underrepresented in public culture and arts offerings on HawaPi Island for the past 15 years. Rock the
Hafla brings this genre back into the spotlight, paying tribute to BIDC's roots —when Middle Eastern dance was first featured in
its earliest productions —and introducing it to a new generation of audiences and dancers. The event will feature performances
by three seasoned belly dance Fusion groups, alongside student performers who participated in recent workshops designed to
deepen understanding of the genre. CRF funding will allow BIDC to cover essential event costs, including venue rental, technical
equipment and staffing, and video production to document the performance for potential broadcast on Na Leo TV. By reviving an
underrepresented dance form and making it accessible to the broader public, Rock the Hafla not only honors BIDC's 50-year
legacy, but also fosters cultural appreciation, artistic inclusion, and community engagement through the performing arts.
*43. 5O1(c)(3) Mission Statement
The mission of the Big Island Dance Council is to develop, foster, and promote quality dancing on the Big Island and to
contribute to the dance and movement education of the community at large.
* 44. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 5O1(c)(3) is connected to the project.
As the premiere multi -genre dance advocacy organization on the Big Island, a program which combined belly dance Fusion
workshops with a public performance of both students and seasoned performers was conceived by BIDC to educate and
promote Middle eastern dancing on the island. This genre was included in the original Dance Extravaganza performances 50
years ago but has not had a public showing in at least 8 years. So, following its mission, BIDC is allowing the public to have the
opportunity to interact with this genre.
* 45.
