In 2015, Governor David Ige signed a bill designating December 20 of each year as Sakada Day, a day to -honor the Filipino laborers whose contributions significantly shaped HawaPi's economic development in the 20th century. The Sakada legacy began in 1906 when the first 15 Filipino workers were recruited to work at the Puna Sugar Company on Hawaii Island. Over the next 40 years, from 1906 to 1946, approximately 125,000 Sakadas came to Hawaii, forming a cornerstone of the state's plantation economy. Sakada Day was formally established through State House Bill 604 to recognize their enduring impact. This year's Sakada Day celebration will be held at the Keaau Community Center, with a focus on honoring Sakada workers from the Big Island. A special tribute will be made to the few original Sakadas that are still with us. Additionally, Sakada descendants will be recognized during the event, which will include a lei offering ceremony at the Sakada Statue. Various exhibits, entertainment, an arts and crafts demonstration, and food and drink will be offered. Big Island RC&D Council has partnered with the Sakada Day Celebration as a fiscal sponsor for over 10 years. This program directly aligns with our vision to promote the cultural environment of Hawaii. The event brings awareness to and recognizes the legacy of historical plantation work and the way it has shaped our current communities. This is a crucial step in educating the public and honoring Hawaii's history for generations to come. The partnership between the Sakada Day event team and our nonprofit creates a stronger infrastructure for a successful program, improves overall outcomes, and gives funders the assurance they need, to know their resources are being utilized as promised. * 45.
