<br />Kaniwala Kalo 0 Ka"Q, the second annual Kalo Festival., will be held on Saturday, December 13,, 2025, from 11 AM to 4 PM at
<br />the Robert N. Herkes Gymnasium in P5hala. '0 Ka'O K5kou proudly announces this celebration of all things Kalo. The festival
<br />features live entertainment,, poi pounding, kalo growing and propagation tips and techniques,, the history of kalo, its cultural
<br />significance, and dozens of vendors selling kalo products ranging from food and baked goods to crafts, artwork, live plants,
<br />corms, apparel, and more. The festival is keiki-oriented and includes activities such as free keiki face painting, various
<br />carnival -style games, and the opportunity to pound your own poi. This free,, open -to -the -public event invites residents and
<br />visitors of all ages to gather, learn, and celebrate Hawaiian culture, ensuring broad community access and participation.

<br />"0 Ka'O Kakou (OKK) is the sponsoring organization of the festival. It is solely responsible for its planning and execution.
<br />OKK volunteers recruit vendors., entertainment talent,, and sponsors; they also promote the festival and set up, supervise,
<br />and clean up the event.

<br />Public Purpose of Requested Funds
<br />Per §2-138 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition., as amended), the County may grant an award only if the
<br />proposed program or service provides direct public benefits and fulfills a public purpose within the County.

<br />OKICs goals for this festival are to make it fun., entertaining., and educational,, while also raising money for scholarships for
<br />local students. The festival will offer hands-on poi pounding, educational booths, and vendors featuring a wide variety of
<br />kalo-related products for sale. Additionally,
<br />it will feature a live plant exhibit showcasing dozens of types of kalo., as well as
<br />an educational presentation highlighting the cultural significance and history of kalo in Hawai'i. Success will be measured by
<br />sales volume from vendors, feedback from attendees regarding what they learned about Kalo., exposing the community to
<br />new Kalo products,, the smiles on attendees' faces as they enjoy the various activities,, and the amount of funds raised for
<br />next year's OKK Scholarship Program. OKICs long-term goal is for this festival to grow into the largest and best taro (Kalo)
<br />festival in the entire U.S. within the next 3-5 years,
