In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
Malama O Puna, in conjunction with the Pahoa Lava Zone Museum, is helping to outfit a rental property as a certified
kitchen to support its mobile military kitchen. The support kitchen has already received initial certification as a
commercial kitchen, allowing the Pahoa Lava Zone Museum to host Pohaku Cafe. This food truck utilizes the rental
.kitchen as its base of operations. Additionally, once a fire suppression system is installed in the support kitchen, it can
be certified to process meats and serve as a preparation space for cooking and freeze-drying up to 250 meals per
month. Much of the equipment needed to bring this plan to fruition has already been acquired; however, additional
items, including stainless steel tables, cutlery, cutting boards, and a freezer, are required to implement the plan
entirely.
*49. 5O1(c)(3) Mission Statement
Malama O Puna is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit, volunteer service organization whose mission is to protect community
resources to maintain a safe and healthy community through its environmental education, hands-on projects, and
advocacy.
* 50. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 5O1(c)(3) is connected to the project.
One of Malama O Puna's successful programs has been to address food insecurity in the community. The organization
initiated this program six years ago, beginning with community assistance in establishing gardens and fruit orchards,
and has since developed a demonstration permaculture garden. Malama O Puna launched a gleaning program and has
been involved in establishing a four -point plan to mitigate feral pig problems in Puna, working toward a solution that
involves a certified cut -and -wrap facility. This initiative aligns with the mission of the new Pahoa Lava Zone Community
Kitchen. The kitchen will be available for rent to nonprofits and small businesses in need of support to conduct their
programs. It will contribute equipment and a workforce to help realize the goal of producing freeze-dried meals for
distribution within the community. The organization aims to focus its efforts on helping households that are food
insecure and assisting kupuna in obtaining proper nutrition.
* 51.
