In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
The Food Basket's (TFB) Kokua Harvest Program seeks $5,000 in funding to support the implementation, management,
and maintenance of at least three fruit stands in Council District 9. In support of TFB's mission to end hunger in HawaPi
County, this project aims to increase access to fresh, locally sourced produce, support community connection and
resilience, and provide healthier, free food options for residents. The fruit stands will serve as convenient distribution
points for fresh fruits and vegetables while encouraging community connection and reducing food waste. Council
District 9 faces challenges in food accessibility, with limited options for affordable fresh produce. Many residents rely on
processed or non-perishable foods due to a lack of access to fresh food sources. Additionally, the Kokua Harvest
Program often struggles to find distribution opportunities for large harvests. This project will address these issues by: 1)
Providing free, fresh produce to residents on an ongoing basis; 2) Establishing a reliable and community -centered
produce reaches consumers rather than being discarded; and 3) Implementing a text alert system to notify residents
when fresh fruit is available, ensuring better access to produce when it is at its freshest and minimizing potential waste
at the fruit stands.
*46. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement
To end hunger in Hawaii County.
*47. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project.
The Food Basket (TFB) is the nonprofit behind the Council District 9 Fruit Stand Project, aligning with its mission to
reduce hunger and increase food access across Hawaii County. TFB's Kokua Harvest Program will oversee the setup and
management of at least three fruit stands, ensuring the distribution of fresh, locally sourced produce to residents. They
will coordinate construction, maintenance, and stock management while fostering community engagement through text
alerts and local connections. TFB is also responsible for the project's budget, securing initial and ongoing funding, and
maintaining the stands in the long term. This initiative will enhance food access, reduce waste, and build community
resilience in Council District 9, with TFB ensuring its sustainable operation.
*48. Please upload a completed CRF Grant Budget Form.
2025 KH CRF D9 Budget Worksheet.xlsx
Public Purpose of Requested Funds
Per §2-138 of the Hawai'i County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), the County may grant an award only if the
proposed program or service provides direct public benefits and fulfills a public purpose within the County.
