In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project.
Waihonu is an ancient Hawaiian fishpond at the heart of Lilruokalani Gardens. Its stone walls, built over a century ago, are
deteriorating and need ongoing repair. Friends of Lilruokalani Gardens is working to restore these walls, preserving both
the pond's structure and its cultural significance. The pond stretches nearly 5,000 feet around, and when restoration
began two years ago, about 10% of the walls required immediate attention.
*43. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement
Friends of Ulruokalani Gardens prepares for activities and festive events throughout the year and is dedicated to fostering,
improving, and maintaining the 24-acre cultural landscape at Ulruokalani Gardens.
*44. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project.
Friends of Lilruokalani Gardens was established to maintain and enhance the Gardens' 24-acre cultural landscape. Through
a Memorandum of Understanding with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department, the organization mobilizes
over 1,000 volunteers annually to care for the park's features, including gardens, structures, and historic sites. The
Waihonu Wall Restoration aligns directly with our mission, as it preserves a vital cultural and ecological resource, supports
sustainable fish habitat, and ensures the continued enjoyment of the Gardens for the public.
*45. The work will help preserve this
culturally significant site and ensure its continued use and enjoyment by the community.
