In 2,000 characters or less, describe the project. <br />The Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long cultural festival that includes a day -long ho'olaule'a celebration of hula, <br />music, and culture, mid -day hula exhibitions, a four -day invitational arts and crafts fair, a free hb'ike exhibition with <br />international performances, a grand parade through Hilo town, and a highly acclaimed three-day hula competition. <br />The purpose of this week-long festival is to perpetuate Hawaiian culture by providing a platform for practitioners and <br />students to practice their culture. <br />*52. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement <br />The mission of The Merrie Monarch Festival is to perpetuate, preserve, and promote the art of hula and Hawaiian <br />culture. The festival endeavors to develop and augment a living knowledge of Hawaiian culture, arts, and crafts <br />through workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, and performances of the highest quality and authenticity. In doing <br />so, it seeks to enrich the lives of all of Hawaii's people, and beyond, including individuals who might not otherwise <br />have an opportunity to participate. <br />* 53. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project. <br />The Merrie Monarch Festival, a domestic non-profit organization registered with the State of Hawaii Department of <br />Commerce and Consumer Affairs, honors the legacy of King David Kalakaua, who inspired the perpetuation of our <br />traditions, native language, and arts. The organization's primary work is producing the week-long Merrie Monarch <br />Festival in Hilo, Hawaii each spring, a cultural celebration featuring Hawaiian music, arts, and a premier hula <br />competition. <br />* 54.
