The Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long cultural festival that includes a day -long ho'olaule'a celebration of hula, music, and culture, mid -day hula exhibitions, a four -day invitational arts and crafts fair, a free hb'ike exhibition with international performances, a grand parade through Hilo town, and a highly acclaimed three-day hula competition. The purpose of this week-long festival is to perpetuate Hawaiian culture by providing a platform for practitioners and students to practice their culture. *52. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement The mission of The Merrie Monarch Festival is to perpetuate, preserve, and promote the art of hula and Hawaiian culture. The festival endeavors to develop and augment a living knowledge of Hawaiian culture, arts, and crafts through workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, and performances of the highest quality and authenticity. In doing so, it seeks to enrich the lives of all of Hawaii's people, and beyond, including individuals who might not otherwise have an opportunity to participate. * 53. The Merrie Monarch Festival, a domestic non-profit organization registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, honors the legacy of King David Kalakaua, who inspired the perpetuation of our traditions, native language, and arts. The organization's primary work is producing the week-long Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawaii each spring, a cultural celebration featuring Hawaiian music, arts, and a premier hula competition. * 54.
