.e
' The Mobiles Care Health Project
St. FYancia Healthcare System and Hawau Leland Catholic Social Ministry
Update -Summary of the First 30 Days of Operation
The Mobile~Care Heahh Project darted services January 6, 1997. The project began with social service
counseling and screenings, intakes to collect demographic information and determine eligibility, heahh
assessments and dental screenings at 6 rural sites in West Hawaii. A map is attached and a schedule for the van
to show the areas and the distances between sites.
77te fast 60 days have been very exciting and fiuitfuL W e began our services with screenings, heahh
assessments, and oral screenings in order to get a "feel" for the problems/concerns of the population we would
be serving. We began our services with intake, heahh assessments from an RN end dental screenings only. We
also have a representative from the Mental Health Division preset at the sites to provide mental health
screenings and outreach services, and our Cara-A-Van outreach staff on site to provide other types of counseling
services for the homeless population. St. Francis has hired three dentists (one that serves each area so the same
dentist goes to the same spot every week}. The project is working with the two community health centers on the
island to provide the medical services component to the project and we plan to have this in place in the next two
months.
At the end of the month, (January 27th) we began to provide dental treatments for returning patients. Below is a
summary of the dental and heahh assessment services that were provided by the staff on the vans.
DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION ON PERSONS SEEN BY THE MOBILE~CARE PROJECT.
Number of Unduniicated People Seen at the different sites is the firot 2 weeks of oaerstion $156
Gender A e Ethnicl Medical Resources
Male 74 <1 1 Caucasian 62 Nome 75
Female 89 1-S 9 Hwn/PtHwn 35 VEST 43
6-12 16 Hi 'c 23 Medicaid 15
ftesidenc 13-18 7 J ese oval 6 Kaiser 3
Lon -time resident 133 19-44 82 Native American 1 HMSA 14
3 months - 2 eaze 20 43-60 38 Mixed Race 14 Medicare 16
< 3 months, lane to 8 60+ 10 Fili ' 0 11 VA Medical 3
Transient 2 Other 9 Other 1
Dental Insurance Coverage: Please note that the medical coverage reported is only for medical coverage. Most

I people seen had no dental coverage other than the adults on QUEST. It is important to note that the people on QLTES7
were adults and only have coverage for emergency dental care (the tooth must be abscessed and the dental coverage will
only allow the tooth to be pulled).
It is our policy that if a child has dental coverage under the QUEST program, we refer t}tan to the dentist they are assigne
to. If an adult is covered under QUEST we will see than for care. Many of the adults that have come to us have needed
fillings, erc. that are not part of their dental coverage. It is our belief that if we can provide this service, these adults will
find themselves with abscessed teeth that need to be pulled. Ali other people seen met the low-income requirements and
did not have detrtal coverage.
Three dentists are employed by the project. The same detrtist goes to the same area each week. Hawaii Island Catholic
Social Ministry is responsible for the oversight and etnployment of the Outreach Nurse, Dtiver/Imake Worker and the
Program Coordinator. Blow is a synopsis of the program and the services provided to the individual communities in th
first few weeks of operatiott (January 6 -January 29, 1997}.
