COUI~ITY Off` IIAWAI`I S~'t~T]E OF I~A~VAI`I <br /> ~r <br /> I~~OIJU°I'I01011~10. <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF A GIFT OF EIGHT LIFEPAK 500 <br /> <br /> AUTOMATIC ETERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS TO THE HAWAII COUNTY FIRE <br /> <br /> DEPARTMENT -FROM DR. AND MRS. EARL BAKKEN. <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Earl Bakken and his wife, Doris Bakken, have donated eight Lifepak <br /> 500 Automatic Eternal Defibrillators (AEDs) manufactured by Physio-Control Corporation, to <br /> <br /> the County of Hawaii, for use by County Fire Department personnel stationed at the Kawailani, <br /> <br /> Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Captain Cook, Keaau, Pahoa and Waiakea Fire Stations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Bakken had previously donated seven AEDs that are currently <br /> used by the Hawaii County Fire Department personnel stationed at the Waikoloa, Laupahoehoe, <br /> Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahala, Waiakea, Kaumana and Kaiulani Stations; and <br /> WHEREAS, studies have shown that cardiopulmonary failure is a leading cause of <br /> sudden death and prompt use of portable defibrillators can more than double the survival rate of <br /> cardiac arrest victims; and <br /> WHEREAS, a medicaUscientific statement issued by the American Heart Association and <br /> endorsed by the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology in 1997 stated that <br /> "automatic external defibrillators that accurately analyze cardiac rhythms and, if appropriate, <br /> advise/deliver an electric countershock are widely used by trained emergency personnel (EMT <br /> paramedics and first responders, such as firefighters and police personnel)" and "have proved <br /> accurate and effective and have become an essential link in the `chain of survival' as defined by <br /> the American Heart Association"; and <br /> WHEREAS, deployment of this portable technology throughout the Island of Hawaii <br /> will greatly enhance the life-saving response capabilities of trained County personnel; and <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Bakken have made extraordinary contributions to the <br /> establishment of the North Hawaii Community Hospital and Five Mountain Medical <br /> Community to enhance the health and well-being of Hawaii County residents, and have richly <br /> contributed to Hawai`i's strategic leadership and reputation as America's "health state"; and <br /> WHEREAS, the value of this donation is approximately TWENTY-EIGHT THOUSAND <br /> AND NO/100 DOLLARS ($28,000.00); and <br /> <br />
