Kohala Intergenerational Center
Background Information
We started with initial plan growing out of Project Care to train high school students in

a Health Academy to provide care for the frail elderly at the site on the morning. We will
Also have the senior citizens mentoring the youth in the afternoon. A commercial
certified kitchen has been planned to afford the whole community an apportunity to
incubate businesses. Economic self-sufficiency has been an ongoing theme with plans to

teach business plan development and the nuturing of entrepernerial endeavors.
At the ground breaking on October 1996 (yes 1996), the program stated the following
vision:
"The Kohala Intergenerational Center will be a special place for the youth and
older persons of our community to congregate, to share time, talent and thoughts,
and to support one another in large and small ways.
The youths will enjoy various activities, including Intergenerational projects with
Senior Citizens. The kapuna will support the youth, in teaching them skills and
responsibilities, helping with school work, mentoring them through entrepreneurial
endeavors, and shaping attitudes with values of days gone by.
The center will be a community gathering place that inspires, encourages, and
builds each participants's spirit, potential ,and self-esteem. The strength of the
Kohala Intergenerational Center will be in the power of it's relationships."
Lately, information about the high incidence of drug use in North Kohala among our
children and teens has focused our attention on the need for prevention programs. While
this goal is not mutually exclusive to the above stated purpose, it could shift the use of
the facility of more of a youth orientaion.
We have asked that we revisit our mission and vision so that we can be clear about
what is wanted for the Kohala Intergenerational Center. Four years is a long time and as
we seek funding for ongoing operations. We want to be sure that we are in alignment
with the Steering Committee and the community's wishes
f:omr,~. APB ~ ~ ~ - t'~
File No. ~
Ref.
