P.O. Box 1082 _
Hilo, HI ~ !1
March 20, 99~
'97 f~flR 20 P~1 4 Q7
James Arakaki, Council Chairman
Hawaii County Council COUNT`," CLf_~r<
25 Aupuni street COUNTY Of~ HAWAII
Hilo, HI 96720
Dear Mr. Arakaki:

All of us are cautious before we open the door of our home and
let in a stranger. How can we know if the person will do us good
or harm? Once he has entered, it is too late, as millions of
crime victims can testify - if they are still alive to do so.
Please don't put our island residents at risk of becoming casual-
ties as well by encouraging Isomedix to push its way in here.

After all, this is not a magnanimous enterprise they're pro-
posing. Their interest is in their own pockets. Their concern
is not our pockets, our economic stability, our quality of life,
our most-likely compromised future. Nor is it the possible
damage to the people consuming the food items in good faith.
How many of the people who demonstrated the widely-touted "excel-
lent consumer acceptance" of the test-marketed products were
informed that they were eating irradiated food? Most people are
unaware of what the deceptively benign logo represents.
If a treatment process is considered so extremely dangerous that
superhuman efforts must be employed to protect people from
getting anywhere near it lest they get cancer, who in their right
mind would believe that wholesome, life-giving food could be the
result? Why isn't more effort being put into finding a safe
alternative treatment, or else consuming the fruit here in Hawaii?
The cost of Isomedix' enterprise is $1.25 million, and they
"generously" intend to cover it themselves. Why should we then be
made fools of b~ handing Mayor Yamashiro $2 million more? Every
day there is new public expression of alarm over Mayor Yamashiro's
obvious corruption. At every turn, he has been open about his
reverence for the buck - the buck for him, not for the struggling
residents of this island, as he tries to make it appear. Please do
not participate in furthering his corruption.
Sincerely,
Yom-,.
Victoria Walsh
cc: All County Council members
~ »a aia
ra._--~~D1'1~.._.
>~x. ro: C..
lse~.
