'97 APR ly Pfd y 20

April 8, 1997 COUNT';'
COUNTY GF HAWAII
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, HI 96720
Gentlemen:
I understand that you (Hawaii) are having a problem with the quality of your

food exports. Rather than solving the problem at the source or during processing,

you plan to irradiate your fruit for export. I don't think this will solve your problem.
The FDA no longer has credibility on the mainland. USDA has less. Our chicken
contains feces; our laying hens spend their lifetime in a windowless building,
never seeing the light of day or setting their feet on the earth. Our hogs are now
raised in buildings containing thousands of head. They live on slatted floors over
an open septic tank and the meat is cured with their own waste. The manure
stench is unbearable and the soil, saturated with manure, threatens the drinking

water. The family farm has been forced out of business under our state socialism.
Dairy farms have had to go to 300, 1000, 3000 and up to 10,000 head, where little
care or concern is given to washing filthy udders before milking, but of course the
milk is pasteurized. Our fruit trees, vegetables and soil are sprayed with tons of
chemicals and we are told not to worry. Because of all the billions spent on USDA

to control and destroy the rural economy, we have the most expensive food in the

world, not the lowest as they claim. And you want to be part of this USDA, inertia,
incompetence, ignorance, insolence and illusion of economic freedom, get a life.
Do all the "specialists" from USDA vacation there and do your thinnking? I

thought you were far enough away to keep your islands healthy, beautiful and the
ideal place to live.
My family uses a considerable amount of pineapple chunks. My dear wife
keeps a large container of {6 each) of peeled and cut up oranges, red grapefruit
and one large can of pineapple chunks, mixed in, on the kitchen counter. Anyone
can help themselves to a bowl at any time-- all gone in three days whereas a bowl
of unpeeled oranges, apples and grapefruit would easily last three months, says
the wife.
Checked the corner turn-table under the kitchen counter and have five
cans in stock. Three of Liberty Gold from Indonesia and two Dole from the
Philippines and you can't compete with these countries. Neither say they had to
be irradiated or were. If your fruit is not fit for export, feed it to the people in your
state.
I live on a farm in Northern Iowa and do not have the time to protest in front
of the supermarket, but the word gets through the network. When your state was
0~ Diw ~.I~.o3
FSIe P(o-- ~~_L,~
ter. To:
P.e~. I;xte..~~ 14 t9g.,,~,~
