~afarik, Gary
from: Phillip DeBlasio [phillipd@hawaii.rr.com]
Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2001 12:56 PM
~o: gsafarik@interpac.net
Subject: Proposed tax increase
duly 2®01
Hawaii County Council
inanct? Cat°nmitfiee
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Subject: The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes
to
$100 proposed by Councilman Curtis Tyler.
®ear Council Person:
T'he current tax rate for vacant (unimproved) land is $10.00 per
$1,000 of assessed valuation.
The current assessed value of lots in Kalapana Gardens in $100.
With the proposed minimum tax of $100 The tax levy on
Kalapana Gardens lots would be $1,000 per $1,000. That's one
hundred times greater than the currently established tax rate.
That would be gross discrimination.
T respectfully request that land recently covered by lava be
removed from the tax roles until infrastructure is restored to
provide access and water service. This will save the county tax
department the incremental cost of servicing these properties.
Actually the discriminatory taxes collected since 1992 should be
refunded.

7/6/01
