COUNTY OF Hl~Wa411
DEPARTMENT Olm PARKS & RECREATION
MEMORANDUM
Date: March 22, 2001
To: Curtis Tyler III, Councilman
Hawaii County Council
From: Patricia G. Engelhard, P&R Director
Re: Waimea Trails &Greenways Project ~ .
Communication No. 152 (Bill Nos. 42 & 43)
Please be informed that the Waimea Trails &Greenways Project is being funded on
an 80% Federal-20% County cost share basis.
To date, Federal funds totaling $313,644 have been allocated for the planning and design
phase of the project.
fihe funding requested from the Parks Dedication Fund is for the County's share of
supplemental planning and design services, which are needed to plan and design a
donated 8-acre site that will function as a trailhead. fihis donation was unexpected and not
part of the conceptual plan that was prepared by Waimea Main Street. Nevertheless, this
donation provides the opportunity to develop a makai trailhead.

The supplemental services are also needed to provide an alternate equestrian trail
alignment, due to liability concerns raised at community meetings.

Any unexpended funds from the Parks Dedication Fund allocation will be directed to the
County's share of future construction costs.

Thank you for your support of this project and I hope that the above answers the questions
you raised on our request.
Nc. ~ ~
F51e No.,_
~ D ~-l P
.ref, To: ~ C, v N GI c.,
~ ~ 2~Q1
