Since not everyone is in agreement on this issue, a <br /> number of authorities have been asked to come to our community--most on <br /> their own time and without any compensation whatsoever--to participate <br /> in public informational forums, answer questions and help us learn the <br /> truth about this process. <br /> *Independent experts say irradiation does not harm food or lessen i t s <br /> nutritional value. The opponents disagree. <br /> 'Independent experts say food treated by irradiation is not harmful to <br /> humans and is not a cancer threat. The opponents disagree. <br /> 'Independent experts say an irradiation facility can be safety built and <br /> operated. The opponents disagree. <br /> *Independent experts say irradiation treatment will create jobs and make <br /> Big Island agriculture more feasible by allowing more local products to be <br /> sold outside of Hawaii. The opponents say large-scale production is a bad <br /> thing. <br /> 'Independent experts say Mainland stores and consumers are willing t o <br /> sell and purchase irradiated products. The opponents threaten them wit h <br /> boycotts and harassment and deny them the freedom of choice. <br /> 'Independent experts who participated in the public forums are qualified <br /> and knowledgeable by virtue of their education, specialized training, <br /> validated scientific research, and firsthand experience.
