From MICRH & GWEN PHONE No. 806 968 6208 Apr. 24 1997 8: 24RM PB1
PLCASC STOP THE FOOD IRRADIATION FACILITY !rrR`~~',\, `
Pp y FiS~ 8 1`1
This is a plea for halting plans for an irradiation plant~~n~Na?ai'a.• 'PWP\`,
Anywhere in Hawaii. I am extremely concerned about havi~
~ Q N
irradiation facility here on the Big Island. Gam"'"'
There are so many reasons N07 to encourage this misstep. Truly too many
to present in a limited format like this. However, I know that the threat
of volcanic activity and earthquakes should be common sense. Not to
mention, the inevitable mistakes and accidents caused by human error.
We arc talking about atomic wastes nuclear waste being dumped on
Hawaii Nei, the precious Aina. The half life of these substances boggle the
mind.
This frantic ploy to funnel the problem of what to do with our agicultural
economic mess is shortsighted and ignorant. As much as proponents of
irradiation feel they are offering a solution for agricultural competition,
they are not considering what must be done for the long haul. That must
include research for an organic solution, by blinying balance tv our
environmental slurnbliny blocks i.e. fruit Ily and oilier problems. The
money they want tv spend un this facility could be tar better spent in
research towards These ends. That is the only sensd~le, long term
solution,
We need years of independent studies done or, the effects of ingested
inadialed foods before we should be circultttiny these products tv tyre
public. While the FDA threatens to remove vitamin supplements from the
shelves, we are being told that erradiated foods are good for us. Papaya
for example, is promoted as a health food. Consumers who are health
convlous are not going to eat irradiated foods. It seems that common
sense is must uncommon when it involves personal agendas and money.
We are hur rified by the thought of vw children are being exploited in any
Cashion, especially when it conr.Frna rnroney. Yet for economic reaoona we
are willing to jeopardize our beautiful island and her reputation.
We are killing the goose that Idyl yuhien eggs here. The future of Hawaii
IS at Stake. PLEASE STOP THIS FOOD IRRADIATION FACILITY! TODAY!
, C-~ w N~~ ~ iN c-, ro ~-I
nn II 77 - ~v z 6 / /~ara~~r l~ ~ o~ l-~W~
~~a d~~ •.flvl eta Icy., r<) l 9'6 ~ 2~2• C
Gomm.
