I am writing to you to reiterate the HIPCC's position in support of Bill A182.
Our organization feels strongly that this type of post harvet treatment facility will greatly
enhance the attractiveness of our locally grown produce. It will help to strengthen the image
that Hawall, as a pert of the United States in America, takes the treatment of it's food supply
very seriously and that fruits and vegetables Imported }rom our Islands are safe for all
consumption.
Sir, we also believe that the cost of the development of a Post Harvest Treatment Facility
should be viewed as an investment in our community and our future. An Investment that we
believe carries very little rSsk. Whatever risk that you may percieve exists, can be minimized by
incorporating language Into BIII #82 that simply states the following:
"lf the County of Hawall needs to step forward and provide the $2 million funding
necessary to bring about the development of a Post Hanrest Treatment Facility then upon
completion o/the project, the County of Hawaii will immediately take the neceessary steps
to recoup it's cost, by eifherselling the facility orleasing if back to a third party fora period
of time."
I believe this may help satisfy reservations that you and ocher council members may have
about the $2 million dollar figure that has been mentioned by the Administration.
Aloha & Muito Obrigado (Thank You Very Much),
wail Island PoRupueae Chamber of Commerce
Jo K. Kai //w,
P sldent
