As more businesses open to the north of Kailua 10iltage, the
number of pedestrians is ~acreasing. t=or one to walk or jog along the section of roadway is a
fr~htening experience. The p8destrian area is narrow; ~'s on the; sar~ae Bevel as the oar 4raff~,
wills the only separatan being a white line. As an add~ibnal hazard, telephone poles sit directly
in the center of this 'walkway'. On several occasions, I have seen vis~or5 taking in the beautihsl
sunset, only to abruptly interrupt this view by nrnning Sato one of these poled Fua~thermore,
v~laeelchairs have to expose ihemsel+oes to the iraffac at iwely~ different times to get around these
poles.
This project calls for much needed safety improvements:
• lJndergroundkag of the utilities
• ~xtendin$ the pedestrian walkway out over 4he ocean to accommodate safe pedestrian
travel, and offer a seawall to protect the street from high surf.
As a board rraembet of PA'T~6, I have worked to promote this safety project since 1996. Our
or+ganizat'ron has been represented on the Transportation i=nhaneement Community Adv~ory
Council, promoting iQs huh rank in tf:e prioritization process. 3ll4le harms adreocated that property
r~?ithin the project epee was kept in public jurisdiction, ire making sure-that rvaatching funds were in
place, and in making sure that tlae project was moving along. This project should be made the
County's number one Transgpr~ation Irnhancemen~r+oject, and I encourage your support.
Sincerely,
y
l ~
Richard t~lerschdorf
L
Sete ~ ~
