~~C~~.~.~~- sl-~/9~
1~~~~r~
May 7, 1997
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Hawaii County Council,
I am an educated, God-fearing, law-abiding, tax-paying, married mother-
of-five, voting resident of the Island of Hawaii. I am not a terrorist and never will
be. But, my Good sense tells me to scream NO! Enough Is Enoughl
I cannot be expected to say yes to the importation of lethal radioactive
material (that is life-endangering for generations) for a very bad business idea
that does not even have the market research to support it. Nor do I believe it's
the County Council's place to market private business. Tax-payers should not
be in the business of supporting anybody's business. The whole thing reeks of
cronyism.
I cannot be expected to support an irradiator company (Isomedix) whose
presentation called the accidents that led to their present level of so-called
safety "stepping stones". Our fragile aina could be that next stepping stone,
and, now with the county's money involved, we share liability for the clean-up.
I cannot trust the safety regulation expertise of our county government
that has yet to figure out how to correctly flush our toilet or throw away our
garbage. Unlike these problems, the containment and disposal of radioactive
wastes require the safeguards and guarantees of a technology no man
possesses, much less Isomedix.
Nor, can 1 be expected to endorse the same plantation-minded politicos,
who bankrupted sugar. Under their stewardship, Hilo Bay has bio-accumulated
into a toxic mix of carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens. No one is cleaning it up.
Lucky we live on a small island under the American Constitution. We still
have a reasonable chance to manage our own destiny. Hawaii could be a self-
sustainable, ecological example of living correctly. Imagine a place of healing
for our planet, a place of refuge from pollution. My hat is off to Curtis Tyler, a
council member with the vision to see an ecological Hawaii. Perhaps it is time

our county seat of power should reside in Kona.
Comm. Floe 21
