Arakaki :
We have a nine arse "farm an the makai side of painted Church. Rd.
in Honaunau, ``IMK 8- 3- 8 -1.0. According to the revised. General Plan,
t:, is land is being designated Important Agricultural Land, which I
understand means tna.t - it is suitabl for intensive agriculture. in
a letter from Virginia Goldstein, I was told this land is normally
used for pasture. At best, the land is extremely marginal.
The land consists of approximately 50% of visible pahoehoe. The rest
is very, very rocky with more pahoehoe underneath. There is no
sign'ficant amounts of soil. The .rainfall is around 30" a year, with
21: inches in 1.998. More .importantly, the rainfall is very poorly
distributed. Production on our farm is extremely pow or nonexistent.
On many occasions the leaves on the coffee trees have been withered
and brown, and the green coffee beans have shrivelled on the trees.
M so, the temperature is a jot higher than it is in higher elevations
where there is soil and more rainfall.
:along this road Lhere are areas that get more rainfall, especially
to the north, south, and east. There are some farms that are on older
I
ava fields that have little pahoehoe and a '_ot of soil..
To designate all ]and in a certain area under one category, without
inspec tions, anc?. seemingly no standards, is absolutely ludicrous.
This land is far Loo marginal to be classified as important agri-
cui tural land.
Your consideration of this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Margaret Brewster
328 -8067
