Box 1842
Wilo, HI 96721
• f RECfiVt~ ~
May 4,1997
John 5antan elo Dare-----Sls_l~.~_..______.___._
9 County Council
Hawaii County Council
Esteemed Councilman,
You have accomplished a groat deal with your business in 20 years,
which has depended in part on tourism and health conscious customers.
What if people stop visiting us bocause we industrialize with an
irradiation facility and maybe a wood pulp mill? Or boycott our irradiated
food products? You can't be sure it won't happen. I urge you to vote
against Bill N62 and Resolution 71-97.
One can obtain opinions pro and con about the potential harm caused to
foods by irradiation, maybe we won't know the truth until such foods have
been used for several years. If it would prove harmful you wouldn't want
the infamous legacy of having approved such a facility. The possibility of
an accident occuriny is more likely, on the world's most active volcano,
with hazards of earthquakes and human error.
I encourage you to develop plans which show off our island as a place
visitors will seek out as an American place unlike any other, without the
resemblance every town on the mainland has to one anon-ter with similar
looking malls and fast rood shops al every entrance and exit. What you
have accomplished with your business is a good example, as well open air
markets, Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultural cei7ters, plantation town
museums, Camping facilities, improved old Hawaiian trail systems, sports
centers, biological gardens, bike camps and trails, recreational parks
(water parks, mtnature golf), botanical mazes (a Cycad maze...) cane roadc
as scenic tours, solar carts delivering the over age 70 visitors on a jungle
cruise, ecological education centers and B 'n B's serving locally grown
produce as other possibilities.
Please, let's retain the natural jewel we found when we arrived in Ka'u
those years back. Everyone receives solace from Nature, let them coma
here to find it.
Comm. No. 212. 27l
P11e No.~,~,
rrQaeoted
Ref. 1b: aNMt
~ MAY 0 7 1991
leer.
