As a rrtemiber of tl~e community that uses this area for s~arf~ng, fi~l~ig and
carr,pi~ag; I support the efforts to protect Kohanaiki from the irr~pacts of exclusi~~el resort
development along the coast fo: the following reasons:
1. This area is rich in native IJavvaiian cultural sites including village areas,
sa;cred/ceremonial areas, anchialine ponds, wetlands and trails as dwell as habitat
for endangered plants, birds and reef fish.
2. My ancestors lived all along this shoreline and told our family stories regarding
the cultural significances that this particular land holds for ail of us. You Dave the
pow=er to encore these areas are not destroyed because of development like so
many other places have been destroyed for the sold purpose of another resort.
3. The land is adjacent to tl€e Kaloko I-Ionoka.l~au National Park and portion. of it has
been designated to be u~thin the Congressianally Authorised Park boundaries.
The local co~rimunities as well as visitors enjoy the beach and coastal arms as a
prune surfing, fishing; d~~y use and camping spot.
5. The Kohanaiki `C31~ar~a, Na Keiki ~Ie'e Nalu and the Kona community Dave
demonstrated coBnmiti~ent to stewardship of tJ€e natural and cu~itural resources for
over 11 years, providing bathrooms and trash pick up, beach clean ups, tail and
pond restoration projects.
Thank you for considering a positive vote for Qpen Space along the coast at Kohanaiki
and for dill # 163.
Mahalo hou,
a ' ,
~°li~ i~oe
